Chapter 2
Flashback to 2010
The Gold Coast was a poppin’ ass bar, right on 41st and Lancaster in the heart of West Philly. It was a hood bar, so it had the best drinks, the best music, and the baddest jawns there every Friday night. I usually rode out with my niggas, but this time I was in the building all by myself sipping my Vodka and Cranberry and just vibing to the music.
The bartenders always made the drinks strong, so it didn’t cost much money to get right at the Gold Coast. Shots were 2 dollars until midnight, and mixed drinks were only 4 bucks all night. Beer was cheap too, Corona’s and Heinekins were the special and were only 3 dollars.
There were a bunch of women in the building celebrating their homegirl’s birthday. She was 25, but looked like she was already about 40 years old. I guessed she’d had a rough life. Even though she wasn’t cute, I brought the birthday girl a shot of Patron. As Drake’s “Fancy” blared through the speakers, I hopped up from the bar and made my way across the crowded dance floor toward the bathroom, but it wouldn’t be a drama-free trip.
“Damn, my man! You just stepped on my fuckin’ foot!” I said, as I looked square in the eye of a light-skinned man with cornrows in his hair.
“Nigga, ain’t nobody step on your shoe. Go head with that bullshit.” he said to me, really disrespectfully.
“Nah dog, these is $600 Gucci sneaks, you at least gonna apologize to me.” I explained to him.
“They probably some flea market jawns anyway. Fuck outta here, homie.” he said, trying to play me.
Then he turned back around to talk to the voluptuous woman he was trying to holler at. However, I wasn’t having it, so I got even closer to him. He didn’t appreciate that, and now the tension was getting thick. We were eye to eye, and everyone who could see us knew shit was about to pop off, including the two bouncers who manned the front door.
“You better get the fuck out of my face!” he said, after putting down his Henny and Coke.
“I’m tryin’ to tell you bul, you don’t want no problem with me.” I said, putting my finger in his face like he was a little kid that I was scolding.
Then, the man cocked back like he was going to swing on me! His first punch was pretty slow, I guess the liquor had his reaction time off. Either that, or he just didn’t have a box-game. I was able to dip the weak ass right cross and counter with a quick left jab that landed square on his chin. His light-skinned face quickly reddened up, partly because he was stinging from the jab and partly because I had embarrassed him in front of the thick jawn that he was hollering at.
Quickly, the bouncers intervened, trying to control the situation. The bouncers were big niggas, but more importantly than being strong, they were the only two people in the building who were strapped.
